Executive Director, Montpelier Development Corporation


The Montpelier Development Corporation (MDC) serves as the steward of the Economic Development Strategic Plan (EDSP) for the City of Montpelier, Vermont. Reporting to the Board of Directors of the MDC, the Executive Director will work closely with local government, area businesses and organizations, to assist individual entrepreneurs and existing firms to establish, relocate, or expand their businesses within the City of Montpelier, and to cultivate an environment that ensures the City’s long-term success and economic viability.​




  • Directs economic development initiatives to achieve the outcomes outlined by the EDSP

  • Provides assistance in the development of short- and long-term economic development plans, as well as the gathering of information and preparation of studies, reports, and recommendations to achieve such goals

  • Provides professional economic development advice, assists in the application and permitting process, and serves as an advocate for economic development

  • Manages budget and finance functions of the MDC

  • Stays abreast of trends and developments in the field of economic development

Provide Wraparound Support to Existing & New Businesses

  • Maintains a robust Business Retention & Expansion Program

  • Works closely with community partners and resource providers to connect local businesses and entrepreneurs to resources and expertise

  • Serves as liaison with various Local, Regional, State, and Federal agencies

  • Formulates and implements marketing and business attraction strategies

Champion Transformational Projects

  • Coordinates stakeholders, projects, and planning to initiate and implement meaningful real estate and business development in the City

  • Assists with negotiation and the management of professional service contracts, property sales or acquisition, and economic development-oriented negotiations

  • Maintains familiarity with existing inventory of available buildings and development sites within the community

Build Awareness & Engagement Around Economic Development

  • Provides information and/or makes presentations to various groups on economic development topics

  • Serves as a member of economic development groups or task forces that promote economic and community development at the Local, Regional, State, or Federal level as deemed necessary or appropriate

  • Monitors and reports findings of legislation and regulations relating to economic development

  • Maintains strong working relationships with the general public, area businesses, clients, the media, and others


  • Experience in or knowledge of business development, community and economic development

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to collaborate with public and private officials, and negotiate complex transactions

  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with the City staff, as well as other organizations and economic development practitioners

  • Leadership, team building, advocacy, and negotiation skills

  • Self-motivation and ability to work toward objectives with minimal supervision

  • Availability and willingness to work flexible schedule including evenings and weekends

  • Real estate development experience or knowledge is a plus


The Montpelier Development Corporation (MDC) is an independent, non-profit organization that exists to ensure the long-term viability of the City of Montpelier, Vermont. MDC was born out of a citizen-driven process and funded by the City of Montpelier. The organization has a $100,000 annual operating budget. MDC exists to ensure a prosperous future for those who live, learn, and work in the city. The organization is guided by a dedicated volunteer board of directors from the community.

Montpelier has the distinction of being the smallest state capital in the United States, with a population of just under 8,000 people.
